Depending on your starting physical condition, interval workouts, because they do work your body hard and recovery time is necessary between workouts, are done two or three times per week.
Workouts last as short as five minutes and more than thirty minutes, depending on your body and what you are trying to do.

Using an elliptical trainer interval workout routine you can shorten your workout time because you burn many more calories than when you use a regular exercise routine. And at the same time you stimulate your metabolism while improving your cardiovascular conditioning.

During the work time, work at a speed that challenges you but at the same time, one that allows you to stay at that speed until you get to the rest time. So you would work harder during a 2 minute work interval than during a 5 minute interval.

You can use the same work rest interval over an over for your entire workout, or you can vary them as you see fit. A typical workout might last 20 to 30 minutes.
